WR55X26529 GE Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator Control Board: WR55X46805 Cross-Reference, Symptoms and Install Guide
Compressor running around the clock, ice maker gone quiet, or the fresh food side creeping warm? Which number GE ships now, the models it covers, five checks before you order, and the swap.
The WR55X26529 main control board is what a GE bottom-freezer refrigerator answers to: the compressor, the fans, the defrost schedule, ice production and the interior lights. If the compressor never shuts off, the ice maker has gone silent, or the fresh food section keeps drifting warm while the freezer holds, the board is what is left once the cheaper parts check out. WR55X26529 was GE's own service number for it, and orders placed against that number are filled today with WR55X46805. Send us a photo of your board sticker and we will read it for you before you commit.
Even if you end up calling a tech, these checks mean you can tell them exactly what you found, which usually shortens the visit and the bill.
Is WR55X26529 Still the Number to Order, or Has GE Changed It?
WR55X26529 is a GE service number for a refrigerator main control board. GE has replaced it with WR55X46805. Order the current number and check your own sticker.
GE stocked this main control board as WR55X26529 for years, and plenty of stickers still in service read exactly that. The number is retired now. Place an order against it anywhere today and the board that turns up is stamped WR55X46805. GE gathered a great many of its refrigerator main boards under that single heading, and this one went in with them. Price a new board under WR55X46805. When the replacement lands, set the two labels next to each other and check every character while the packaging is still sealed.
This is not a universal board. It is a direct replacement for the part number printed on your original board. Boards that look identical may be programmed differently, so match your sticker first.
| Number on the board | WR55X26529, a GE service number, printed on the white sticker. This is the number GE stocked the board under |
| Replaced by | WR55X46805. GE has superseded WR55X26529 to this number, and WR55X46805 is the board GE supplies against it today |
| Board type | Main control board for GE bottom-freezer refrigerators, French door and two-door alike. It runs cooling, defrost, the fans, ice production and the interior lights |
| Cross references | AP7245825 and PS17875680. Both hang on the current WR55X46805 number rather than on WR55X26529 itself |
| Numbers on the same service board | WR55X46805 took in a long run of WR55X main boards at once, WR55X26529 among them, alongside numbers such as WR55X26282, WR55X26286, WR55X26307 and WR55X26575. Any of those numbers on a label now resolves to the board GE ships today |
| One limit worth knowing | GE supplies this board as an authorized service part for refrigerators charged with a flammable refrigerant such as R600a. Changing a control board leaves the refrigerant circuit untouched. Work that breaks into that circuit needs a licensed technician with recovery equipment |
| Availability | GE no longer supplies WR55X26529 new; a fresh order arrives as WR55X46805. Appliance Pro USA has the WR55X26529 itself in stock |
| APU status | FailSafe Certified, 1-year warranty (registration required), same-day shipping on orders placed before 4 PM EST |
Which GE Refrigerators Take the WR55X26529 Control Board?

Not listed? Run your model through the check above and use its buttons; a missing model is not the same as incompatible.
On the models we have worked on, it sits behind a small access cover low down on the back.
This model list is for reference only. GE may change boards between production runs, so two refrigerators with the same model number can use different boards. Always order by the part number printed on your original board, it is the only identifier that decides. This board turns up across the CFE28, CFE29, CWE23, CYE22, CYE23, DFE28, DFE29, GFD28, GFE26, GFE27, GFE28, GFE29, GFS26, GNE26, GNE29, GWE23, GYE22, GYS22, PFD28, PFE27, PFE28, PFE29, PWE23, PYD22, PYE22 and ZWE23 prefixes, so any model starting with those is worth checking.
Compressor Running Non-Stop or the Fridge Creeping Warm: Is It the WR55X26529?
Cooling, defrost, the fans and ice production all run through the WR55X26529. Several of them failing in the same week points at the board they share. Clear the coil, the sensors, the defrost parts and the ice side first.
Everything below starts with the refrigerator unplugged. These are the failures customers describe when they end up on this board.
- Compressor running around the clock and never cycling off
- Fresh food section creeping warm while the freezer below still holds
- Both sections warming together and food starting to soften in the freezer
- Ice sheeting over the back wall of the freezer, defrost stalled
- Ice maker parked and the dispenser giving neither ice nor water
- Refrigerator dead after a storm, with a live outlet at the wall
As far as we have seen, most refrigerators on this platform have a display in the door or the dispenser, so a code may already be showing. GE assigns those meanings by model series and not by part number, which makes a code a starting point rather than an answer. Check yours in the owner's manual that came with the refrigerator.
Let's verify it is the board by checking the common parts that contribute to these failures. They are inexpensive, easy to check, and ruling them out means you order once, with confidence.
The white sticker is what decides the order, and the WR55X number on it is the one to buy against. Read it off the board while it is still in the refrigerator, before you open any packaging.
A coil buried in dust and pet hair keeps the compressor running long past the point it should have shut off. The condenser fan drives air across that coil, so a blade that has seized leaves you in the same place.
The thermistors are how the board knows how cold each section actually is. One that drifts or opens hands it a false reading, and it cools the wrong compartment on the strength of it, which is not the board's fault. They cost little and they go often.
The board schedules defrost, but the heat itself comes from hardware further down the line: a heater drawing current, a thermostat that closes once it is cold enough, and a fuse still intact. Lose any one of the three and ice sheets over the freezer wall while the fresh food side warms up.
An ice maker that has quit while the food is still cold is usually its own problem. The ice maker module, the fill valve behind the lower back panel and a fill tube plugged with ice each stop production without the board being involved at all.
A choked coil may well turn out to be today's culprit. It has spent months forcing the compressor and the board to run long past their normal duty. Keep a spare on the shelf and a warm fridge becomes a fifteen-minute swap instead of a week of coolers.
Replacing the WR55X26529: What Does the Job Actually Involve?
The WR55X26529 is reached from behind the refrigerator, under a cover near the bottom of the back. Budget 15 to 30 minutes and a couple of ordinary hand tools.
Unplug it at the wall, then walk the refrigerator out far enough that you can stand square behind it, which on a built-in surround is usually the slowest part of the whole job. A few screws release the access panel down at the bottom of the rear wall. Before a single connector moves, photograph the board with everything still plugged into it. Touch the bare metal frame to shed static, free each plug by its latch instead of tugging on wires, lift the old board clear and set the new one in the same orientation, holding it by the edges. Then put every plug back on the header your photo shows.
The WR55X26529 Is In and Nothing Changed: What Now?
When a new WR55X26529 changes nothing, the fault that started this is normally still in the refrigerator. Recheck the plugs, the sensors and the coil first.
A board that does not match yours
Work from the photo you took. Header positions, plug count and mounting points should line up with the board you removed. If they do not, stop: a board that looks materially different usually means the wrong part is in hand.
Every plug back on the header it left
The connectors sit close together and key alike. Seat one a position off and the refrigerator acts precisely as though the new board arrived dead.
Go back to the thermistors
Whatever a failed sensor was telling your old board, it will tell the new one exactly the same thing. Test them before you decide this board is faulty as well.
Leave the doors shut and let it catch up
Both sections come back down over several hours, not minutes, and opening the doors to check on it restarts that clock every time.
Still stuck?
Give the refrigerator several hours at a normal setting, then contact our team before you return anything.
Why Do These Boards Fail, and How Do You Prevent It?
Voltage spikes, a hot condenser bay and stray water are what end these boards. Spend five more minutes at the back and your new WR55X26529 lasts longer.
While you are back there, three quick checks help your new board live a long life.
- Put the refrigerator behind surge protection. A lightning hit, a utility fault or a generator changeover drives a spike straight into the board, and so does the power arriving back after an outage. Put the refrigerator behind a surge protector rated for a major appliance. It is among the cheapest ways to defend the repair you have just made.
- Keep the coil and the condenser fan clean. Dust and pet hair on the coil force the compressor and the fan to run longer and hotter, and the board back there heats up with them. Vacuum both while the panel is off, then once or twice a year afterwards.
- Chase down any water you find behind the refrigerator. A blocked defrost drain or a weeping fill valve puts moisture into the same corner the board occupies, and the staining shows up long before the failure does. Dry it, find where it came from, and look over the door seals while the refrigerator is out.
Which Parts Are Worth Changing While the Refrigerator Is Out?
Getting to the WR55X26529 opens up several other parts on the same panels. Doing a tired one today saves dragging the refrigerator out twice.

What Do People Ask Before Ordering a WR55X26529?
These answers cover the WR55X46805 change and where the board sits. They also cover flammable-refrigerant models and the two-door layout.
I ordered a WR55X26529 and the paperwork says WR55X46805. Is that right?
Yes. GE retired WR55X26529 and now fills those orders with WR55X46805, so the newer number on the box is the expected outcome rather than a mix-up at the warehouse. It does the same job in the same place. Compare the sticker on your old board with the one that arrived and you are looking at the same part under two numbers.
My compressor never shuts off. Would this board do that?
It can, and it is one of the more common reasons people end up on this page. Before you order, clear the condenser coil and check that the condenser fan spins freely, because a choked coil produces exactly that behavior for the price of a vacuum. If the coil is clean, the fan turns and the compressor still runs without a break, the board is your leading suspect.
Which panel do I take off to reach the board?
The small access panel down at the bottom of the rear wall. Unplug the refrigerator and walk it out far enough to stand behind it comfortably first. Nothing inside the fresh food or freezer compartment has to come out to get at the board.
Is this the same board on a two-door bottom-mount as on a French door?
It is. What decides fitment is the number on the board, not how many doors the refrigerator has. This part covers both layouts across the GE, GE Profile, Cafe and Monogram ranges, so a two-door bottom-mount and a four-door French door can share it. Read your sticker and go by that.
My refrigerator uses R600a refrigerant. Does that change anything?
GE supplies this board as an authorized service part for refrigerators charged with a flammable refrigerant such as R600a, so it is the correct part for those models. Swapping the board never opens the sealed refrigerant system. Anything that does open it belongs to a qualified technician with recovery equipment.
Does the board need setting up before it will run?
It drops in as a straight swap. No jumper settings and no configuration routine have come up on any standard replacement we have handled. Some models may require a firmware update after installation, and firmware changes should be performed by a qualified technician. Any board that has been flashed, reprogrammed, or had its firmware altered is not eligible for return or warranty coverage.
My model number is not in your list. Does that rule it out?
No. Model lists rarely cover every variant a manufacturer built, so a missing model number settles nothing on its own. The number printed on your own board is what settles fitment. Read the sticker, and if it has worn past reading, use the free check above and we will confirm it for you.
