WR55X30806 GE French-Door Refrigerator Main Control Board: WR55X46805 Supersession, Symptoms and Install Guide
Fresh food side warm, ice maker dead, or a refrigerator with no lights at all? What this board runs, why GE now ships a different number, which models take it, and the five checks before you buy.
The WR55X30806 main control board runs the compressor, both fans, the defrost cycle and the ice and water functions on GE French-door refrigerators. If the fresh food side is warm, the ice maker has quit, the lights are dark or the refrigerator does nothing at all, this is the board behind it once the cheaper parts check out. GE has since retired WR55X30806 and moved the line onto WR55X46805, and the next section covers what that means for your order. Send us a photo of your board sticker if you want it confirmed first.
Even if you end up calling a tech, these checks mean you can tell them exactly what you found, which usually shortens the visit and the bill.
Is the WR55X30806 the Same Board as the WR55X46805?
WR55X30806 is GE's service number for this French-door refrigerator main control board. GE has since superseded it to WR55X46805. Order against the number on your own label.
GE puts more than one kind of number on a refrigerator control board. WR55X30806 is the service number, the code GE and the parts suppliers stocked this board under, and on most of these boards it is printed right there on the white label. Some labels in the same family also carry a longer factory production code beginning 197D, which is GE's own build number for that exact version.
That supersession is the part worth understanding before you order. GE stopped supplying WR55X30806 and moved the whole line onto WR55X46805, so a new board bought anywhere today arrives under the newer number. Appliance Pro USA still supplies the WR55X30806 itself. Either way the answer starts at your label, so read it before you order.
This is not a universal board. It is a direct replacement for the part number printed on your original board. Boards that look identical may be programmed differently, so match your sticker first.
| Number on the board | WR55X30806, GE's service number for this board, printed on the white label. Some labels in this family carry a longer 197D production code as well |
| Replaced by | WR55X46805. GE superseded WR55X30806 to it, and the old number now points there wherever you search |
| Board type | Main control board assembly for GE French-door refrigerators. It runs cooling, both fans, the defrost cycle, the interior lights and the ice and water functions |
| Where it sits | Low on the back of the refrigerator, behind a small access panel held by a couple of screws |
| Cross references | AP7245825 and PS17875680 belong to the current WR55X46805. No AP or PS reference is published against WR55X30806 on its own any more |
| Numbers it shares a service board with | GE folded a long run of WR55X main boards into WR55X46805 at the same time, among them WR55X24644, WR55X25146, WR55X26529, WR55X27068, WR55X28074, WR55X29608, WR55X30452, WR55X30805, WR55X35725, WR55X37006 and WR55X38248. A label showing any of those lands on the same current part |
| One limit worth knowing | Refrigerators in this range run on R600a refrigerant. Changing the board never opens the sealed system, but sealed-system work belongs to a qualified technician |
| Availability | GE no longer supplies WR55X30806 new. Appliance Pro USA has the WR55X30806 itself in stock, restored and tested |
| APU status | FailSafe Certified, 1-year warranty (registration required), same-day shipping on orders placed before 4 PM EST |

Not listed? Run your model through the check above and use its buttons; a missing model is not the same as incompatible.
Wherever it fits, the board sits in the same spot: low on the back of the refrigerator, behind a small access panel.
This model list is for reference only. GE may change boards between production runs, so two refrigerators with the same model number can use different boards. Always order by the part number printed on your original board, it is the only identifier that decides. Models in this range begin CFE, CWE, CYE, DFE, GFD, GFE, GFS, GNE, GWE, GYE, GYS, PFD, PFE, PFH, PWE, PYD, PYE or ZWE, so check yours against the list above if it starts with one of those.
GE Fridge Warm, Dark or Dead: Is It the WR55X30806?
The WR55X30806 drives cooling, defrost, both fans, the lights and the ice and water side. Several of those quitting together points at the board they all share. Clear the door switches, sensors, defrost parts and fans first.
Pull the plug before you take a panel off. These are the faults that send people looking for this board.
- Fresh food side warm while the freezer still holds
- Nothing at all when the door opens, no light and no display
- Frost building on the back wall of the freezer compartment
- Ice maker and water dispenser dead at the same time
- Interior LED lights dark or flickering on their own
- Fans pulsing on and off, or a compressor that never picks up
There is no published fault-code table for the main board on these refrigerators, so the way in here is the symptom rather than a code. Work the list above. If your panel does put something up, look up what it means in your owner's manual before you order any part.
Let's verify it is the board by checking the common parts that contribute to these failures. None of them costs much, all of them are quick, and clearing them is how you order once instead of twice.
The label carries the number a replacement has to match, and it reads easiest while the board is still bolted in. Compare the sticker before you open the anti-static bag.
A refrigerator with no light and no display looks exactly like a dead board, and sometimes it is a dead outlet or a door switch stuck in the closed position. The switch is what tells the board a door opened, so a stuck one leaves the lights off and the display blank.
A small sensor in each section reports back to the board. One that has drifted, opened or shorted hands the board bad information, and the board acts on it. That is the sensor's doing rather than the board's, and sensors cost very little, so they get cleared early.
The board decides when to defrost. Three parts under the freezer evaporator do the work: a heater, a one-shot fuse protecting it, and a sensor that calls time. Lose any one of them and the coil packs with ice, and once the coil is buried no cold air reaches either section.
The evaporator fan behind the freezer wall pushes the cold air around; the condenser fan at the bottom of the back keeps the compressor from cooking. A blade that binds, or a shroud packed with ice, leaves the fresh food side warm. A compressor that tries and gives up points at the start circuit rather than at the board.
Even if a fan turns out to be the culprit today, it has been dragging on the board for months. Keep a spare on the shelf and a warm fridge becomes a fifteen-minute swap instead of a week of coolers.
How Is the WR55X30806 Control Board Changed on a GE French-Door Refrigerator?
The WR55X30806 mounts behind a small access panel on the lower back of the refrigerator. Plan on 15 to 30 minutes with a screwdriver and a nut driver.
Pull the plug at the wall and walk the refrigerator out until you can stand square behind it. The access panel is low on the back and comes away with a couple of screws. Get a photo of the board with everything still connected, put a hand on the metal frame to shed static, then unlatch each connector rather than pulling on its wires and slide the board out of its housing. The new one goes back the same way round: connectors onto the headers in your photo, ground wire onto its own screw, panel back on.
New Board Fitted and the GE Fridge Is Still Warm: What Now?
A new WR55X30806 that changes nothing usually means the original fault is still in the refrigerator. Work through the connectors, the sensors and the ground before you blame the board.
Give it a day before you decide
A refrigerator that has been warm for days needs hours to come back down, and the ice maker will not run until the freezer is properly cold again.
Count the headers against your photo
Put your photo next to the fitted board and work along it. Every header that had a plug should have one again, and the mounting points and the ground tab should sit where the screws reach them. If they do not line up, stop: a board that looks materially different usually means the wrong part is in hand.
Every connector back on its own header
Several headers on this board accept a plug of the same width, so a connector that lands one position across reads exactly like a dead board.
The ground has to be remade
The ground wire goes back on its own screw and into the metal chassis. Leave it hanging and a perfectly healthy board can sit there doing nothing.
Still stuck?
Run the refrigerator at a normal setting for the rest of the day, then talk to us before anything goes back in a box.
What Kills a GE Refrigerator Control Board, and How Do You Stop It?
Power spikes, trapped heat and stray water are what end a GE refrigerator main control board. Three checks while the back panel is off take those threats off your new WR55X30806.
While you are back there, three quick checks help your new board live a long life.
- Give the refrigerator a surge protector. A lightning hit, a utility fault, a generator changeover or a run of short outages one after another all put a spike straight onto the board. A protector rated for a large appliance costs far less than a board and a freezer full of spoiled food.
- Vacuum out the machine compartment. The condenser coil and its fan share the bottom of the back with the board. Choked with dust, the compressor and the fan run longer and hotter, and the board sits in that heat all day. Clear it while the panel is already off.
- Look for water where there should be none. A blocked defrost drain or a weeping water valve drips into the housing the board lives in. Dry it out, look for staining or a white crust on the plastic, and deal with the leak before the panel goes back on.
Which Parts Are Worth Changing While the Panel Is Off?
The same panels that expose the WR55X30806 expose several other parts worth a look. Changing a tired one today saves a second trip behind the refrigerator.

These answers cover the WR55X46805 supersession and what actually turns up when you order. They also cover where the board sits, the ice maker, and how long the repair takes to show.
I ordered a WR55X30806 and a WR55X46805 arrived. Is that the right part?
Yes. GE superseded WR55X30806 to WR55X46805 and now supplies the whole line under that one number. It does the same job in the same place. Compare the header count and the mounting points against the photo you took, then fit it.
My board's label says WR55X30806. Do I shop that number or the new one?
Either one gets you to the same board. WR55X30806 is the number on the board you are taking out, and it is the one we stock. WR55X46805 is how a new one is sold today. Read your own label before you order either way.
There is a long number starting 197D on my board as well. Which one counts?
That is a GE factory production code, printed next to the service number on some of these labels. Shop with the WR55X number. If the WR55X line has rubbed away and the 197D code is all you can still read, the free check in the fitment section above will match it for you.
Where is the main control board on a GE French-door refrigerator?
Low on the back, behind a small access panel held by a couple of screws. Unplug the refrigerator and walk it out far enough to stand behind it. The board sits in a plastic housing with all the plugs facing you. Photograph it before you disconnect anything.
My fridge is warm and the ice maker is dead. Is that one fault or two?
Usually one. This board runs the cooling and the ice and water side, so when both go at once the part they share is the obvious suspect. If the ice maker is the only thing out and the temperatures are normal, start at the ice maker hardware and the water valve instead.
Does this board need programming after it goes in?
Some models may require a firmware update after installation, and firmware changes should be performed by a qualified technician. Otherwise it is a straight swap: connectors back on the headers in your photo, ground wire back on its screw, panel on. Any board that has been flashed, reprogrammed, or had its firmware altered is not eligible for return or warranty coverage.
How long before I know whether the repair worked?
Leave the doors shut and give it several hours at a normal setting before you judge it. Check the fresh food side first; the freezer takes longer still, and the ice maker will not start filling until the freezer is properly cold, so allow a full day for ice.
